A well-trained voice is ready for any challenge! This workshop is the perfect tune-up for singers who are ready to learn more about vocal technique or singers who want to learn about singing as a beginner. Learn the fundamental skills that go into making your most free, flexible, and expressive singing.
In this interactive class, you'll have an opportunity to explore your own vocal artistry in a nurturing and supportive environment. Have fun diving into your potential by exploring your vocal capabilities.
Workshop clinician, Dr. Penelope Shumate, brings her expertise to work with singers from beginners to advanced levels. Dr. Shumate was featured on the cover of the May 2025 issue of Classical Singer magazine, a national publication, along with an article detailing her versatility as a teacher and performer in diverse vocal genres including musical theatre, jazz, sacred music, as well as classical vocal genres such as operetta, opera, and oratorio.
A Shenandoah Valley native, Dr. Shumate recently moved back home, where she is enjoying serving the region as a teacher of voice and piano and as a soprano soloist for professional and community organizations. Praised by The New York Times for “bell-like clarity and surpassing sweetness,” The New York Concert Review for “sparkling coloratura perfection,” and in Opera News magazine for “sincerity and attractive lucidity,” Soloist performances in New York City include her 20th appearance at Carnegie Hall in 2025. Additional New York performances include soloist appearances at both David Geffen Hall and Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. She can be heard as a soloist on “Messiah Refreshed” (Signum Records) recorded at Abbey Road Studios with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, “Kassandra”(Navona Records), “La pasión según San Marcos” (Summit Records), and “As the fireflies watched . . . chamber music of James M. Stephenson” (Klavier Records). She has performed internationally and throughout the US with opera companies, orchestras, and music festivals. Her “Baroque to Broadway” recital performances include appearances at professional music organizations and universities, as well as community organizations. As a presenter and masterclass and vocal workshop clinician, she has been engaged by Classical Singer Magazine, the National Opera Association, the National Association of the Teachers of Singing, and the College Music Society as well as numerous Universities across America. Her academic service at the University level includes many years of experience teaching voice and opera and she holds a DMA in Vocal Performance and Vocal Pedagogy from Louisiana State University.
